Many Benefits of Joining a Mens Club

There are many benefits to joining a Mens Club.  In this post, I’m digging into the archives to reprint a contribution from the Rancho Sierra Golf Course’s July 2014 newsletter, by Bob Gonzales, that deserves a reread.

Benefits Beyond a Game

Hi!  I’ve been contributing to the Rancho Sierra Newsletter on behalf of the Rancho Sierra Mens Club for a few years.   I’ve shared the virtues and benefits of being a Mens Club member – Guaranteed Tee Times,  an SCGA certified handicap, discounts on courses throughout California, and a chance for some friendly competition.  But this month, I’d like to expand on probably the most important aspect of Mens Club Membership – the friendship and camaraderie of the members.

About ten years ago,  I enjoyed golf but was frustrated trying to get my buddies to come out and play.  After playing one afternoon, I ran into several members in the clubhouse. (One of them was CR Smith, who served in the Air Force with my father.)  They told me about the advantages of Mens Club Membership.  My wife, Jenny, was with me that day and was impressed.   So impressed, that she bought me my first membership as a birthday present.

Since that day, I’ve got to know many golfers over the years and established some very good friendships with members of the Mens Club.  I don’t mean just “golf-buddies”- I mean true friends.  Friends who invite you over for a barbecue, who invite you to their wedding, who invite you for Super Bowl Sunday, friends who are there for you when things aren’t going so well.

When Jenny passed away five years ago after a valiant fight with cancer, the members of the Mens Club stepped up.  They came to the service. They checked on me to make sure I was doing okay.  Playing golf was a way of dealing with the heartbreak.    When there was a charity tournament for Cancer Research, not only did many members participate in the event,

the men of the Mens Club took it upon themselves to sponsor one of the holes.

The Mens Club has stood by me since that sad day five years ago. I wish I could say the same about some of my other friends from five years ago.

I encourage those of you who have been considering membership to take that step and join.   You will meet a lot of very good people while enjoying the game of golf.
