Welcome!

Hi everyone,

Hope you have all been enjoying the fall weather.  The days are getting shorter, so as you may already know, we changed our start times for twilight and nine holes plus to 1pm and 3pm respectively. That means you can play the rest of the day at a discounted rate, plus it’s only $8 more to rent a cart.

Did you see the new study reported on GolfDigest.com that says you should play more golf?  We of course, knew that, but there are so many benefits, including the cardiovascular benefits for your physical health as well as the psychological benefits from social interaction.  Staying active can reduce anxiety and depression.  So when your significant other says you’re too busy with honey-do lists to play golf, cite this study!

Did you know juniors play for free every day after 12pm with a paid adult at Rancho Sierra?

The holidays are coming up soon, so be sure to watch for our soon-to-be-arriving new merchandise.  We’ve already received new Mizuno bags and other merch including new military hat clips.  The latter would make great stocking stuffers for your favorite golfing vet!

Book Your Next Tee Time ONLINE

Have you tried booking your tee time online?  Our online reservation system is a fast and simple way of scheduling your tee time 24/7.  Book two months out in advance for golf or footgolf, regular or senior, twilight or nine holes plus, we can handle it all!  No credit card required, simply schedule your tee time online and pay at the course 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tee time.

Thanks to all who have reached out with questions/comments.  Please continue to do so by filling out a suggestion card in the clubhouse, or sending us feedback via your digital receipt.

Thank you for your support!  And please let us know if there is anything we can do to help improve your experience at Rancho Sierra.

News from the Clubhouse

Oct already and some of our mornings at 6:00 am are in the low 30’s I like winter but this is a little early to be getting this cold. Our hours are changing pretty soon we will be opening around 7 am and closing by 5:30 pm. If you think something outside or inside needs some attention please let the starter  know so we can take care of it.

With this cold weather comes the Frost Delay signs so you might want to call first thing in the morning and find out what time the course will open for play. We also tweet the weather conditions and course events daily, so follow us on twitter or visit our web site where we post our twitter feed.  Or come out and sit inside, have a cup of hot coffee, cocoa or tea and talk with your friends until the frost delay is over. We have plenty of refreshments inside the club house so you can always come out and play and then come inside with your friends and have some refreshments.  Also enjoy our fresh hot chili.  Get a bowl, nachos, or add chili to a hotdog or polish dog – all taste good after golf with a nice cold beverage.

We are always trying to carry what a golfer would need to help them with their game. If you would like to see us carry something in the pro shop, please stop in and let us know.  We will do our best to get that said item. We will be receiving a new shipment of hats, beanies, jackets, etc.  Clubs can be custom ordered just talk to Paul or give him a call if you see something we don’t carry hopefully he/we can get that club or bag.

With the holidays coming so fast, don’t forget we carry Gift Cards in any denomination you would like.  They can be used for anything we have in the pro shop along with green fees, monthlies, range cards, even cart rentals just ask! Also we have a variety of balls, tees, shirts and gloves.

Think ahead and book your tee time early.  The week of Thanksgiving is busy especially Black Friday, the day after.  We recommend you make your tee times ahead of time, because we can’t guarantee a tee time for walk-ons. You can make them on our web site or in person now or call – we will take them as early as this week. Planning on having friends over for the holidays a set tee time is always the best way to go!

A good rule of thumb “Always throw your clubs ahead of you. That way, you don’t have to waste energy going back to pick them up”, not that our golfers out here get that mad!

Misc. Notes

Now on a more personal level: After serving 11 years as Mens Club Secretary/Treasurer, I am going to graciously step down. The past few years have seen many changes in my life – I lost my wife to breast cancer, I retired after 25+ years of municipal service, I married again and now have a new family, (some of us get lucky twice in life.) I am probably going to be moving away from California and need to focus on that and other new adventures. This is also the last contribution that I will be making to the newsletter. It has been an honor to do these things and I feel privileged to have done so. Hopefully someone out there will step up and fill in for the Newsletter contributions. A few words to the Mens Club members, the Officers, Rancho Sierra staff and to golfers in general. Thank you to the Rancho Sierra staff, especially Shirley Pfund, for working with me in the Mens Club, the Lancaster Corporate Challenge, the City of Lancaster League and tournaments, and the Breast Cancer Awareness Tournaments. Your assistance and cooperation with me and these organizations made for much smoother events.

Members and Officers: Don’t be afraid of new ideas or procedures but do have respect for history and tradition. If you feel that something isn’t right, (either on the course or in the clubhouse) don’t just complain. Offer a solution in a positive manner. Don’t just tell someone they’re wrong. Politely offer assistance to a Board member if you see that they are struggling with something. The Officer will either gracefully accept or politely decline, but they will appreciate the offer. Rancho Sierra Golf Course does not exist solely for the Mens Club. It is a business and is open to the Public. Please be respectful of non-members who may be on the Course during a Mens Club event. The Course needs them to keep the business open and we need the business open to have a Mens Club. Also remember that while we are “competing” when we play, non-members are not as competitive. They may be playing for fun, practice, exercise, camaraderie, and family bonding.

Remember that how the Mens Club acts and behaves can reflect on the Course in general to non-members. Mens Club membership can’t grow if golfers don’t play here.

Remember that Officers serve the membership. The membership does not serve the Officers.

When making decisions, consider what is best for the membership as a whole. The low handicaps, high handicaps, the weekend member, the weekday member, the perfect attendance member, the occasional member, the young or new member, the old-timer (who played when there were no trees on the course), the every other time member, and the whenever I can make it member. It is a responsibility to consider ALL members.

ALL GOLFERS

Try to keep up your pace of play. You don’t have to rush, just keep things moving. If faster players are coming, please let them play through. It’s okay to take your time and enjoy the day. Just don’t hold up others.

Please be patient with new players as they learn the game. They will take longer to play since they will hit the ball more times than we do. Encourage them. Especially when you see Moms and Dads (and grandparents) spending quality time with their kids.

Please help keep the Course looking good. Fill your divots with sand or turf. Keep carts, pullcarts, golf bags away from the greens. Repair your ball mark on the green (be proud that you hit a good enough shot to make a ball mark! ) Replace the flagstick so that it stands straight up.

Respect and obey all course rules regarding carts, cart paths, and ground rules.

I know that beer is cheaper at the gas station than the clubhouse, but bringing beer on the course is grounds for the ABC to revoke the Course’s alcohol license. Then there would be no beer to cry into after your round!

If you have any questions, please email us or visit us on Facebook.

And as I’ve been putting in these news letters all the years:

Don’t forget the ultimate golf etiquette.  Respect the course, your fellow players, yourself and the game of golf.
See you down the road,
Bob Gonzales, Mens Club Secretary/Treasurer 2007-2018

Tips from Our Pro

Let’s Start From The Top!

(Top of the swing that is)

What’s new and exciting? What a great summer it has been…So many of you achieved your personal best this season. It has been great to watch and hear all of the success stories…See all of the positive energy during our sessions and witness the rewards on the course.

Today’s tip is generated from a common flaw that comes from hitting a lot of balls and/or playing many rounds: We become very relaxed about our club positions at the top of our swing…Yet that is what helps set up the club face to be square at impact and can help create effortless power instead of powerless effort.

Next practice session take a look at what your club face is doing at the top of your takeaway. Is it square/open/closed? Is your arm fully extended from your ear…but yet relaxed? Do you have the proper wrist hinge? You may not be able to make a large shoulder turn but if you can get the club in the correct position at that moment more than likely you will be able to not only generate above average swing speed but the face of the club will be square at impact which usually means a long and straight ball flight…And after all, who couldn’t use a little more consistency in that area?

If you are looking for great deals on lesson packages for yourself or as a gift, look in AV Smart Buys Magazine – Delivered to your mailbox.

Book your session today!
